Astam Library

Astam (अस्तम)

Astam is in the Kaski district of Nepal, specifically, in the Dhital region north of the lakeside city of Pokhara. It is known for its panoramic views of the Annapurna’s, quaint village life and Eco-freindly resorts, such as the eco-lodge. While rich in bio-diversity, culture and history, the struggles of education fail to be masked by the encompassing beauty. Within this district illiteracy is still widely seen. According to the latest census, nearly 75,000 people cannot read or write within this district. Three quarters of whom are women.

Yet hope does persist. HANDS in Nepal recently built a library in the Upper Astam school, located in Dhital 8. Filled with books, tables and tools to perpetuate a stable learning curriculum, this Library aims to stabilize literacy in the rural reaches of Nepal. Coupled with a Neighboring computer lab built by Logged on Foundation, this school has become a model for educational development in the provincial parts of the Himalayan region.
